Red-Spotted Purple - Limenitis arthemis astyanax - as beautiful as they are, they only occasionally visit flowers but prefer to feed on such delicacies as dung, tree sap and rotting fruit. This photo was taken on the edge of woods in the shade and the colors are deeper than they appear in bright sunlight. I have often found them on the ground or even on pavement, slowly opening and closing their wings, which makess them nearly ideal photo subjects.
