Red-Spotted Purple - Limenitis arthemis astyanax - is the same species as the more northern White Admiral - Limenitis arthemis arthemis - and the ranges of the races overlap in Pennsylvania so intermediate forms may also be encountered. Within five minutes of spotting this one on Gruber Rd., I saw at least two more on Hein Rd.; I have also seen them in my yard in South Carolina.
