Rural life is inherently conservative. If you get a little prosperous, you don't move to a trendier neighborhood, you fix up the house you have or build another one on your farm; the same applies to outbuildings. So, there is always a lot of the old and a very little of the new in evidence. This enforced material conservatism is buttressed by the unchanging cycle of daily tending to animals or seasonally tending to crops. This is why even the fairly radical peasant and small holder parties of Europe have seldom made solid or lasting alliances with the "progressive" parties. This is an important part of why I like rural living.
