It finally struck me that the way to get a fair photo of this nocturnal thief without getting sprayed was to remove the screen from a window about ten feet away. Afterwards, I read that these critters can accurately aim their spray 12-15 feet, so the plan had a defect. Still, repeated flashes from the camera elicited only curiosity and not hostility.
